Ignite


Ignite is a 12 month project funded by the Community Response Fund, a fund provided by the Ministry of Social Development.    This project sits under the umbrella of the Nelson Multicultural Council. 
 
It’s aim is to improve employment outcomes and social connectedness for former refugees in Nelson. 
 
Ignite aims to increase the participation of former refugees in social, educative and community programmes, and is also looking at new initiatives that address the gaps in settlement needs of the refugee communities in Nelson.
 


There are three main project areas being sponsored by Ignite:
 
1.  Interpreting - 
 
There are also a number of smaller projects being run, such as Haircutting, Cookery, Car Mechanics, First Aid, which have been requested by the community. 
 
 
Completed or started:
Feb-April 2011 Cookery class over a 10 week period
March-July 2011 Senior Social English Group, 14 week period

July-Sept 2011 Driver Licencing Language training, 100 hours course
August - Sept 2011 Parenting In NZ - First '3 evening block course'
Sept - Oct 2011 2nd Parenting In NZ course,  for Chin people, with an interpreter.
Sept-Nov 2011 Prevention of Family Violence assistance
7, 14, 21 November 2011 3rd Parenting In NZ course,  for Nepali/Bhutanese people, with an interpreter.
22 November 2011 Second Haircutting Class,  at the Victory Community Centre. 
23 November 2011 Car seat safety session
25 November 2011 Internet Safety seminar
 
Upcoming:

Youth

Outdoor programmes for former refugees to assist their integration and appreciation of NZ and NZers culture.

Ignite is sponsoring a day for a group of 8 women at Whenua Iti, building on self-confidence, with some team challenges and rope activities.

For young people aged 12 - 14 years, a day has been organised that will provide team challenges and opportunities to work together, and be challenged in a supportive environment.
20 June 2012 "Hear Our Stories" - refugee stories from Nelson.  Publicly acknowledging and celebrating the personal achievements and contributions that people from a refugee background make to our community is very important.
This publication will be launched on World Refugee Day - 20th June 2012
