Parenting in NZ‘Parenting in New Zealand’ Program Outline Ignite in partnership with the Nelson Kindergarten Association and SKIP is offering a positive parenting course to parents from a refugee background. The aim of this program is to educate parents on the value of positive parenting and introduce them to practical solutions to everyday parenting problems. The course consists of 3 sessions:
The course is presented by Brenda Holdaway and supported by Cristy Aydon ![]() Brenda has been a kindergarten teacher for over 20 years. She is currently working for the Nelson District Free Kindergarten Association. She has been advising parents directly for over a decade. ![]() Cristy is the fieldworker for Nelson Multicultural Council. She came to New Zealand from the Philippines in 2000. She knows what it is like to adapt to a new country: to maintain her own culture whilst adjusting to New Zealand life and becoming a participating member of the community. The course is being offered over three evening sessions. Both parents are encouraged to attend, and child care is arranged. The course caters for a small group, to a maximum of ten people. A number of courses are being offered, with each one focusing on a different ethnic group or language level, to enable interpreters to be used when required. First course, August-September 2011, taught in English. Second course, September-October 2011, with interpretation for Chin Burmese people. Third course, November 2011, with interpretation into Nepali for Nepali/Bhutanese people. Fourth course, February- March 2012, with interpretation into Burmese for Kayan, Zomi and Chin people.
