Refugee Stories"Hear Our Stories" Refugee Stories from Nelson There are many fantastic people from refugee backgrounds in Nelson. Publicly acknowledging and celebrating the personal achievements and contributions that people from a refugee background make to our community is very important. The idea has been developed to produce a publication that will profile individuals and groups from the different refugee communities in Nelson, who are doing well in areas such as school, sports, culture groups, work or business. The publication will be launched at a community event on World Refugee Day 20th June 2012. Nominations were collected for people to feature in this inaugural publication. The nominated person was contacted, interviewed, photos taken, and their entry prepared for publication. About 12 people will feature in the first publication. Project Goals:
1. Acknowledge the success and or contribution refugee background people are making to the Nelson community.
2. Produce a publication in which young people from refugee background aspire to be included in future years
3. Inform the wider Nelson community of the history of refugee settlement in New Zealand and within the Nelson region.
4. Provide a resource that demonstrates the positive input of former refugees into our community and our region
