Day One               February 11th, 2012
 
  • Welcome and introductions
  • The role of the interpreter
  • Ethics of interpreting  
  
LUNCH BREAK
 
  • LANGUAGE – interpreting the message not the words
  • Rules: NO ADDITIONS, NO OMISSIONS, NO CHANGES
  • Consequences of adding, omitting, changing and summarizing.
  • Using the first person
  • Idiomatic English – The use of “Yes”. 
  • Interpreting silence.
 

 
Day Two               February 25th, 2012
  • Non-verbal communication. 
  • The importance of seating arrangements
  • Controlling the interpreting process. 
 
LUNCH BREAK
  • LANGUAGE
  • Paralinguistic features (e.g. Intonation)
  • Accuracy – covers both content and delivery
  • Importance of context
  • Consequences of mistakes in accuracy
  • Terminology – the importance of preparation
  •  What to do when you don’t understand?
 
Reflection and summary
 
 
Following the successful completion of the course participants will receive a
Certificate of Attainment in Interpreting Support.
